EAST CLARE HARRIERS

Introduction

Hunting country extends east from Tulla to Feakle, Mount Shannon, Whitegate Co. Clare and on to the Galway border. It stretches all the way south along the shore of Lough Derg through Killaloe and on to Clonlara. West of Clonlara it takes in Parteen and Broadford to the north thence to O’Callaghan’s Mills and back to Tulla. With the Slieve Bernagh Mountain in the middle of the hunting country over looking Lough Derg, the East Clare country encompasses some of the most spectacular country in Ireland. Visitors have often confessed to being awe struck by the views. The terrain is quite mixed with stone walls and banks, high and low country, drains and hedge ditches. There is something to suit all tastes and abilities.

We Hunt on Sundays from October to March in different Parishes throughout East Clare. The Hunt leaves at 12:30pm. Neat dress is essential and horses should be clean and tidy. Visitors are welcome to hunt by appointment.

Since its formation the Hunt has engaged actively in a wide range of associated Country Sports. Point-to-Pointing was the first established additional activity and was held in Scariff for many years. Due to inclement weather having a debilitating effect on field conditions and land development it has been held for the past ten years in Gauranbuoy, Killaloe, on the lands of the Denis and Miriam Flynn, whose support was so freely offered and so very much appreciated. With the help of Denis and Miriam the Killaloe Point-to-Point has gone from strength to strength and is recognised on the annual Point-to-Point calendar as a testing and exacting course. We also hold our Hunter Trials each year, and organise a number of sponsored charity ride to fund raise for local charities.

History

Originally the whole of County Clare was hunted by the County Clare Harriers. Then it was agreed that there was sufficient country to facilitate two Hunts. The East Clare Harriers was officially formed in 1974, its hunting country was mapped out and it was registered with the Master of Harriers Association. Since its formation the Hunt has had both live and drag hunts.
